D. Rex Hamilton, MD, an ophthalmologist certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology, is Director of the UCLA Laser Refractive Center and Associate Clinical Professor in the Cornea–External Ocular Disease & Uveitis Division at UCLA. Prior to entering medical school, Dr. Hamilton graduated Summa Cum Laude, Phi Beta Kappa from Dartmouth College with a double major in physics and mathematics. He then received a Master of Science degree in Biomedical Engineering from the University of Viriginia. After graduating from medical school at the top of his class from the University of California's Irvine College of Medicine, Dr. Hamilton completed his residency training at the Jules Stein Eye Institute. He began performing refractive surgery during residency training at the Jules Stein Eye Institute. He then completed a one-year fellowship in refractive, cornea, anterior segment, cataract and glaucoma surgery at Minnesota Eye Consultants under the directorship of Dr. Richard Lindstrom.

In addition to his duties at UCLA teaching fellows and residents, Dr. Hamilton is involved with numerous volunteer activities, which include memberships on the Editorial Board of the Journal of Refractive Surgery and the Preferred Practice Pattern for Refractive Surgery Committee for the American Academy of Ophthalmology. He was recently appointed to the Refractive Leadership Council of Alcon Laboratories to help shape the future of refractive surgery technology. His main research interest is in the area of corneal biomechanics and improved diagnostic techniques for refractive surgery screening. In additional to lecturing both nationally and internationally on topics ranging from premium intraocular lenses to dry eye syndrome, Dr. Hamilton has contributed a wealth of peer-reviewed journal articles, scientific presentations, book chapters and on-line educational materials to the ophthalmologic community.

Recognized for his contributions to the field, he was elected to Marquis Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare, 4th Edition and Who's Who in Science and Engineering, 7th Edition. He is a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery, and the International Society of Refractive Surgery.
